- Asteya: non-stealing - not taking that which is not freely given
- Brahmacharya: non-excess / containment / moderation
- Aparigraha: non-possessiveness, not grasping or clinging
The five niyamas, personal practices that relate to our inner world, include:
- Saucha: purity
- Santosha: contentment
- Tapas: enthusiasm / self discipline
- Svadhyaya: self-study, inner exploration
- Ishvara Pranidhana: surrender
