My take on the Jesse Reno Talk

I spent a goodly afternoon the other day, listening to podcasts and stuff.  One thing I found inspiring was discovering Derek Sivers.  He has this thing where he reads a book and underlines things that stand out as meaningful as he goes, then goes back and types up those notes, and keeps these as a record of what he learned from each book.  I like that. I read a lot of books and often write notes, but they are all dispersed and unfindable again.  I am not sure I will type them up in text files a la Sivers.  but maybe I could do it here.

So the next inspiring thing I cam across was a talk by Jesse Reno.  I haven't quite got to the end of it and I don't have time just now.  But I did write some notes.  I don't' think I can embed the video but here is the link.  I love his energy so MUCH!

Here are my notes.  am making no apologies for there jus tbein random words and phrases.

THIS! made me cry with joy and want to DANCE so very very much. Enjoy

Swing Dancers vs. Street Dancers @ Montreal Swing Riot 2015 from Alain Wong on Vimeo.

There is something about this clip that makes me so very excited.  I wish wish wish my body was able to do what these folk do.  I love to dance so much and feel the music.  I know in my head I am doing this when i hear music i love.  And hey - dance like no one is watching.  But if they were...they wouldn't see this.  This ROCKs.  I love a dance off - I love the whole thing of it, and how it gets better and better.  Just love it.

You gotta make your own fun........

A cardboard arcade. Awesome. I love this kid. I may have mentioned it before, but there is quote from a film, I think it was by David Mamet, anyway, the quote is "you've gotta make your own fun, otherwise it's just entertainment" or maybe I am paraphrasing. Whatever. The sentiment resonates deeply with me. There is a difference between what you make your self and what you can buy, or consume, or watch or hear. Doing it yourself makes it more fun. And this kid has it in spades. To me it's not the heartwarming flash mob aspect of this wee film. It's just the sheer awesomeness of his amazing cardboard arcade. X enjoy x and then go make something your self.

Needed this today...

Live with intention.
Walk to the edge.
Listen hard.
Practice wellness.
Play with abandon.
Laugh.
Choose with no regret.
Appreciate your friends.
Continue to learn.
Do what you love.
Live as if this is all there is.

--Mary Anne Radmacher--

In particular the bit that says 'choose with no regret' x
Who the hell is Mary Anne Radmacher?  I don't know, but it seems like a pretty damn good advice.

stuck

Whenever I am 'stuck', i  think of a (half remembered quote from) zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance.  If 'stuck' is when nothing comes to mind, well this is really quite Zen .  Its what monks and meditators practice and many people find incredibly hard.  In fact, if you ever find yourself 'stuck' and nothing is coming to you, just see how long you can manage to keep that empty space going.  I garner.  you will find that it is very hard to be 'stuck' for long.  Thinking of nothing is pretty difficult.  Try as hard as you might but very soon, an idea will pop into your head.  The more 'stuck' you are, the better, I say.  If you are 'stuck' you are up against your boundaries and about to think of something new.

I guess that sometimes being 'stuck' can be where other annoying and not important things that are whirring around, taking up space, or perhaps the same old idea keeps coming back again and again and again?

Perhaps that is why meditation is a useful tool to learn.  Or doing something totally different for a while.  Going for a walk? a bit of soup making? a nice relaxing hot bath?

If you can truly manage to empty your head........then there is wide open space for that new idea to just pop up and surprise you.

on simple abundance

I was reminded the other day that we already have enough.  There is no lack. We are abundant if only we were to take the time to look and see and feel and understand.

I am rich in a world of plenty and fret and worry only make my world and my self smaller and more contracted.  Fretting about fair shares and all such.

the 7th Dalai Lama has this to say;  ‘for a relationship to work, you need to give more than your fair share’

Good work 7th Dalai.

random kindness

A friend of mine just received and anonymous choclate filled Christmas hamper from a stranger, someone who is doing a marathon 366 days of Random Acts of Kindness

And another friend posted this rather charming clip.  Am going to try and find it and post it now, honest.

I know its not a new thing, but novelty doesn't make it wonderful.  The effect makes it wonderful.

Go forth my lovelies, and commit an act of random kindness.  Spread the love.  It is Christmas after all.

Making your own fun

Its not classified as work in our society.  I mean, it doesn't bring in money does it?  But home making is important and needs input, creativity, effort, planning, budgeting and all stuff that work needs if it is going to produce good results.

I don't know why I am thinking of this today.  I guess I have just hosted 2 Christmas parties (very small ones) and really gotten into my Christmas merry making.  And I have, no, WE, as a family, have gotten so much out of it.

You know how sometimes a line in a book or a film can totally capture you, and you remember it long after you remember much anything else about the book or the film.

In a film.  God I can't even remember the name of it.  Its about folk making a film somewhere in America, and SJP is in it as a fussy starlet.  David Mamet wrote it.... I THINK....

Well, one character is telling someone else about FUN.  She says, you have to MAKE your OWN FUN.  Otherwise, it's just entertainment.

And it still rings around my head as being something so very very important about LIFE.  You just can't BUY love or happiness or friends or fun.  You have to make it, make friends, make love, make your own fun.  Its the only way.

There was really quite a lot of effort and work that went into making this Christmas, 'Christmassy'.  And the 2 teeny parties we had, cost money, was a lot of work doing a lot of cleaning and tidying, preparation and planning.  And the decorations and home made cards and home made mince pies took a while.  Especially with Bub helping.  But it was worth it.  Worth it more than the time and the effort and the money.  Because putting this sort of effort in, MAKES it FUN.

Our home feels full of magic because of it.  And you just can't even put a price on that.

a very dark house

With my new methods of organising myself and keeping my brain free of clutter, I make a lot of notes of little commitments I make to myself, and I make sure I incorporate them into my lists.  I have a list of 'back burner' things, that are really not at all urgent and I am not actually working on right now.  It actually has a lot of really cool things in, this back burner list.  Things like 'live in a converted horse box' or 'go to burning man' or 'go to Goa'.  Its stuff I am interested in, but do not have the time nor money to pull off right now.

However, some of the things on my lists are just little things.  One such little note was 'visit Eaton Nott on Preston Rd' .  Its not something I really needed to do or anything, but it had been hanging around for sometime.  I don't even know where the note came from and I had almost forgotten about what it was that had sounded so interesting about it.  But, the other day, I found myself in the vicinity and with a little tiny bit of time to kill. So I got to tick it on my list.

WOW.  What an extraordinary place.  VERY VERY SPOOKY.  It definitely fits under the whole Dark House umbrella.  Its fascinating and beautiful and awful at the same time.  Full of skulls.  Mostly rats and birds, but also a fair amount of human skulls.  And some human skeletons.  And a horse's skull intricately carved.  And extraordinary amazing costumes made from feathers and leather and skulls.  And rat pelts.  Her couture, and it is most definately couture, is entitled Road Kill Couture.  And uses only bones and skin from farm, or erm, road kill.

I have to admit to feeling quite spooked by the human remains.  And a bit queasy with the pickled baby mice in a jar.  But the costumes were extraordinarily darkly weirdly beautiful. And some of the bird skull jewellery and fascinators, gothically awesome.  I dunno.  I dunno if my dark house could go that far.  I could not be spooked in my own house.  Feathers I am good with.  Bones.... bones are too much.  I am not so Gothic as that.

But it was, without a doubt, worth a visit, macabre and out there on its own limb. Two folk definately following their own passions.  Taxidemy, bone collecting ....  not your average pursuits...

off the cuff

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.  I have to remind myself of that sometimes, because there is so much seemingly almost within reach in this world.

But don't let that stop you dreaming big.  Because its fun and you never ever know for sure when a dream might come true.

Today I am dreaming of attending Flora Bowley's workshop in Bali.  Half painting, half yoga.  Ah, bliss indeed.  A week, on the other side of the world.  With my son, oh maybe he could come with me.... with my new job, with my finances, with....ah.  Life its possibilities, its dreams and its fantasies....

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are...... bring it back. There is still so much I can do.

I have had several nudges this week toward the end of  - when am I going to get painting again.  Its rising very much like a sea of urges within me.  Admin seems to take my time. Nonsense admin.

I had a marvellous chat with my old friend M (I did a practice session of People Who Do Producitivity on her about 2 months ago) and she is proper flying.  Am so pleased.  So many things are starting to blossom, have been undertaken, are happening.  From getting a raise, to becoming a proper freelancer, to volunteering at her youngest daughter's school, to building an extension to her home.  All progressing.

SO.  Do any of you wish for more progress in your lives? More headspace? More balance?  It works this stuff it really does!

And I just so would like to paint in Bali and do Yoga..... ahhhhhhhh.

Aside from that.  Creativity and Drawing is fascinating me.  Have been put in touch with this website, which I havent' even really had time to delve into yet.  But its a world of interest to me.

Questions

This morning I  had a skype chat with the lovely Beth Nichols.  Who as you may or may not know, organised the UK's Do What You Love Retreat and is co hosting the Hello Soul Hello Business e course with Kelly Rae Roberts in the new year.  I 'met' Beth via doing KRR's Flying Lesson's e course last year.  (see button on my blog to the right there) Beth is a creative who has a good business brain, and thankfully she is putting it to good use in creating a business for herself, a business where she is doing what she loves.  You gotta hand it to her, early last year she didn't even know what a blog was, now here she is, running a fantastically popular site Do What You Love for Life with its e courses and community and retreats and all.

Now the reason I called her this week, is because I am very excited by my new job.  I think that what I am doing is also helping people do what they love.  And I am realising that I am falling in love with this new job I have.  I am doing what I love.  And not only that, but it is helping me carve out the time from my busy busy life to do other things I love.

So.  I am going to write about it for DWYL (watch this space) because I am now one of those folks who is on the path. Doing what I love.  Very happy about that.

It was cool to chat about the weird coincidences where you build your path before you even know you are.  Like my blog being called "Get Stuff Done".  Like Beth's first blog post being titled "Do WHat you Love".  Its like we planted seeds and they grew, and bloomed and blossomed.

And here. Here are my questions.... How can I create an e course? and create webconsulting arm of People Who Do and their marvellous methods that I have learnt that help you clear your head and worklife of the admin-y stuff so that you can get on and do what you really want to do?

How?

Despite my wonderful time 'away from the screen' I do love the way the internet opens up the world and gives you the links to create your network of likeminded souls across the globe.  And I can see there are opportunities there that do not exist in the way they do, well, off screen.

I have really enjoyed e courses.  And I think skype is fabulous - I mean, being able to talk to someone in another part of the world, in your own front room.  I did a Spanish Lesson with someone from Southern California, I showed my friend around my home she had never seen because she now lives in San Francsisco, the lovely Louise Gale advised me on how to progress my art business from her Hoboken Flat.  There must be a way to make it work.

So, there is something I am interested in.  I had better talk to the guys about it.  But it could work am sure of it.  Just planting a seed.  In my own life.

back on track, budgets, books and stepping away from the screen

Am rather pleased to say that Hub and I have managed to have a very friction free chat about sticking to a budget.  We menu planned together the week ahead and we are going to stick to that and only buy what we need.  It seems so simple, but recently our weekly shopping bill has sky rocketed.  I know that prices have gone up and all, and that Hub is eating a protein rich diet, which is not cheap.  But still.  Its outta control.  For quite a while this bothered me, then I decided not to be bothered by it as it was a pointless exercise to try and deal with it on my own. I mean, what's the point of menu planning if Hub went and bought what he wanted to eat anyway.  We needed to both be involved.  And I didn't even bring up the whole sticking to our own cash budget in the week thing.  It was his idea.  Not that we are going to restrict it exactly, but we are going to track it.  Which should help us not be such spendaholics.  So.  In a whole celebration of that.  I shall be doing a tad of daily tracking here.  Sorry if tis dull to anyone!  But this is my personal blog and I can do what I likes!

Another thing I have done of late is switch off the internet at source.  I was finding myself mightily distracted by faffing about on facebook, ambling about finding new tunes on Spotify, blog reading,  checking email and sitting in front of my screen for TOO LONG all of that mallarky.   And it was irritating me and making me feel out of focus.  And given that I am now a Person Who Does and regularly dish out the tips of batch processing email and stuff, I figured it was time to do a little screen time management of my own.

It really worked.  I worked just from my next step lists for about the house.  I actuallly did the food audit I have been thinking of doing for - er - years.  And you guessed it, we have a lot of food.  So this week, as well as the Menu Plan, I am aiming to actually eat up some of it.  And am sure as hell not going to be buying any more of stuff we already have packets of (rice!!!).

I was very pleased to have done a few portraits for Mondo Beyondo folks which I had promised to do waaaay back in the summer.  And I think doing them has both loosened my eye up a little, given me some ideas to create a crafted, individual, portrait / photo / collage which is unique, but the style is replicable.  And I have some new ideas for new styles too.

Ah, and lastly I have been reading some interesting books about small business.  Well I have been reading one of the ones I bought anyway.  The first one is called The E Myth by - Michael E Gerber -  (who I am delighted to tell you did not even start to take himself seriously until he was gone 40) And the other I have bought and am yet to read, is called How to be Excellent at Anything by Tony Schwartz and Jean Gomez (yup, great title, lets see how I get on!) who run an interesting program called The Energy Project - which helps stressed out execs get their mojo back.  Or tries to stop them keeling over and popping their clogs aged 50?  Anyway, its intresting stuff.

Oh and lastly, lastly, am reading Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.  As I had a fabulous brief chat with a friend who has an idea for a kind of 'step away from the screen' convention for web designers.  I am also rather excited by the whole idea of R mode (as Betty calls it) thinking.  Which seems to be very much along the lines of what Yoga does,   And creativity requires. And is how I think..... alot of the time.  All this organisation stuff, I love it, because I am the kind of chaotic lass that needs it.  Its not my natural state!!

Well, that's my catch up and NOW, I am going to STEP AWAY from the screen!

murmurations

I know this has been around.  But in case you haven't seen it yet.  This video of a murmuration is really wild.

Its funny, writing my last post I had begun by writing how tired I was and wondering why, when I felt nothing really had happened in the week.

I was doing something different every day.  I totally forgot about Charleston.  And Charleston was really cool.  Charleston post later then.  For now.  Just watch this clip and feel the awe.  That girl's face at the end sums it up.

A day at the the Farm

On Thursday I went to Hawthbush Farm for a day with People Who Do.  It was a meet up of all those interested in becoming associates or working in some capactity with them, and a kind of introduction to the company and a chance to  hear where they are at, and discuss what our input could be.  Good news is that they have plenty of work and desperately want to step away from the deivery side of it.  Which is where I (and a few others) would step in. Good to know there is work there.  I was slightly overwhelmed when the talk was around business development.  I guess I feel really out of the world of business.  Perhaps I don't even really want to get into that side of it so much either? I don't know.  I guess if I knew the language and had some experience it would feel better.  For my part I am excited about doing the delivery side of it, and also the options to bring in business and how that might pan out with commission and so on.  What I really liked was the group of people gathered together.  A bright, creative, interesting and more importantly, interested bunch of folk.

The other thing was the wonderful place that is Hawthbush Farm.  One thing completely and utterly got me.  They had this beautiful function room, with this massive table, and they had had a dinner there the night before.  A chef had come down from Claridges and cooked a show piece several courses meal.  And they were going to do this, often, and it be a non profit, but for fun thing, with guests paying £30 and bringing wine.  OMIGOD yes.  This also made me insanely jealous. No, not jealous.  But you know sometimes when you experience something, and its some one's way of life, and you think.  BUT THIS IS HOW I WANT MY LIFE TO BE.  The big table thing.  Its so totally my dream.

But, see, the other good thing, is that People Who Do, want to book that experience, I will get to go there and have a splendid dinner. And while it may not be my table, at least I am going to get to eat at it.  Quite frankly I could not imaging a better way to spend my time.  Apart from doing that and spending the day painting and then having a big meal prepared like that.

At this beautiful farm there is also a large house to rent out and subsiduary cottages so that a group of people can stay there,

So my Art Retreat ears pricked up and my heartbeat grew a little faster at that idea.

How to be OK with Not doing something. Oh and trip to London.... more of that later

My 2 practice session ladies have got back to me.  I love getting these messages, about how things that have been dangling for years being annoying, are now ticked of the list.....

For J, she has sorted the headboard in the guest room and vac packed a whole load of clothes to go to the loft to get rid of a chest of drawers she hates, that and getting the curtain pole sorted in the bathroom at last.

But I also heard back from M, who left me saying she felt overwhelmed by the amount she had to to do. The whole 'overwhelm' thing - well, what I do is meant to help with that.  I certainly felt light and clear afterwards, as did J.  She said things like 'everything is doable' where as M did not.  She seemed more overwhelmed than before.  I was a bit concerned.  But I got a text saying that she LOVED her little black book and was flying through stuff.   She didn't do 2 things that were in her diary to do.  I made sure that she rescheduled them.  Theory is this.  If someone arranges to meet you, say, on Thursday, for lunch.  And they don't show up.  It pisses you off right? Its rude and annoying and you are cross with them for letting you down.  However, if they call on Wednesday and say, Sorry, something has come up, can we rearrange.  It may be a bit annoying, but its OK.  Shit happens, right?  SO Same goes for an arrangement you make with yourself. If you just blow yourself out, you end up pissing yourself off, and getting angry, and its all wasted energy.  But if, you reschedule whatever it is.  That's OK. You are making a decision.  Its a conscious act and you are still responsible and feel in control.

Its all about feeling just as OK with what you are NOT doing as with what you are doing.

I also had follow up from PWD re how my second training went, and basically a lot of what I talked about with M was part of another workshop they do about planning.  I feel kind of able to cope with that too then.  AP (accelerated productivity) is about the stuff that can get in the way of proper planning.  It clears the way, it clears your mental pathways too.  Its a declutter.

Oh its late.  Grandparents (Hub's mum and her husband) are staying in Brighton and were here this evening.  I Have drunk again!  ooops hic!  And an early start tomorrow too.  Oh and here I am wittering away into cyberspace!!

And I haven't even mentioned where I went last night!  I have to say that I am certainly managing my Artists Dates these days.  I took myself off to London last night to go to the BFI.  Yes, very cultural.  Get me.  My friend Ellie has curated a season of films by the late Maya Deren.   It was pretty cool.

Clearing your head

This post from Danielle La Porte reminded me of what my new job at People Who Do is all about....  helping people clear the way for bigger and better things...

get immediate relief: energy leaks + enlightenment

the lock that always sticks
the client that can never remember what you said
that kink in your neck
slight allergies, slightly foggy head
the girl on the team who's always cranky
those too-tight trousers
the way your partner greets you (s.he can do better)
the way you greet your partner (you can do better and you know it, and you want to)
those damn e-newsletters that are so tricky to unsubscribe from that you just hit delete and curse at the screen.

the pebble in your shoe is bigger than you think

Small, annoying things. Energy leaks. We tend to discredit the slight aggravations in life + work because our attention is on accomplishing the big things. But think about the trying to walk with a grain of sand in your sock. You won't go more than a block until you frantically peel off your shoe and give things a firm shake 'n swipe. Ahhh, relief. Think about the dramatic effect of a pin prick to an inner tube, the power of a mosquito, that impact of a sliver.
Every time you make REPEATED contact with aggravating tasks and situations, you make a conscious or unconscious choice to endure (the root of the word endure is 'to suffer',) and to settle with less-than-ideal. This kind of aggravation triggers resentment and bad ju-ju. We direct our pissed-off vibe outward, (Damn landlord needs to fix this lock.) Or inward, (These too tight pants are what I get for being so lazy.) And in doing so, we affirm any feelings of helplessness and overwhelm that are floating in our consciousness. And a little bit of our energy zipples out of our sails.

fix the small stuff

Noticing -- really noticing -- what's rubbing on you is part of being conscious. When subtleties grab your attention you are not OCD, you're lucid. When you deal with the annoyances, you're not a control freak, you're the master of your reality.
Look at it this way: energy leaks are usually really easy to fix because they're small. It's simply a matter of stopping to tend to them. When you fix the stuff that's picking at you, you get relief, and that freshness helps you focus on the big stuff.

god + mastery are in the details. so is your freedom.

Where's the rub in your day-to-day? Make a plan to cure, dissolve or absolve it.
What's the mosquito-like thought form that's zifting in your psyche? Visualize rinsing it away, make a phone call that will settle things.
What's broken that you want fixed? Hire a handyman, find a homeopath, reach out and mend it with love.
Your vitality deserves an as-soon-as-possible response.
Get on it. Because you have bigger things to do.

Equinox Dancing with Hunters Moon Morris

On Wednesday night I got the most random of texts.   "I have two tickets for a morris dancing class in Eastbourne, but the girl I was going with has let me down, do you want to come?"  It was pure surreal.  And as such could not be turned down.  There is no way I would EVER have thought of doing that for a night out.  Its proper Artist's date material.  And the weird and unexpectedness of the whole thing totally engaged me and I was very excited about it.  Total unknown.   Plus very nice to see C.  She went to Burning Man for the first time this year.  I really want to go to Burning Man....

Anyway, I digress.  I picked C up from the station and we followed the printed out google maps to a primary school in the depths of Eastbourne suburbia.  This was a long way from home.  And me and C were into the deepest darkest unknown territory.

I looked up the Hunters Moon Morris on the web.  They do Border Morris which is not often seen, and is wilder and freer than the more common Cotswold Morris - and have the MOST amazing outfits. Not your average Morris then.  No, if Morris did Rock n Roll, these guys were it.

DPP07DB0509160653

We arrived and a really lovely oldish lady came to greet us, with  a hug and a kiss!  We were warmly welcomed!  The school hall was filled with a proper assortment of folk. Men, women, even a child.  It was Open night so there were about 10 of us total beginners, there to learn a dance. The dance at the top of this blog, as it happens.....

Hunters Moon Morris

It was, of course, weird.  But it was weird GOOD.  The people were friendly, lovely.  Totally keen on their thing.  Doing what they LOVE.  though a couple of the chaps, - they were still friendly - but they were AWESOME.  I wish I had taken photos, because it is not often you meet people you just want to stare at.  There was this old chap, with a massive beard and long hair in a pony tail.  And piercing blue eyes, who just stood.  With such charisma.  Honestly.  It was like seeing a character from another time  and place.  He stood so tall and proud and still.

I digress.

lammas20100129

The music, was brilliant.  And there must be something ancient and rootsy about the whole thing, because, they all said it was addictive, and it was the best thing they had ever done with their lives, and it was like that.  C and I LOVED it.  WE learnt a dance called The 4th Of September (because that was the date the guy who wrote the dance wrote it) and we did it.  With big sticks.  Its a slightly wild lolloping kind of Morris dance.  And it really did feel good.  In a weird, I have done this before, it totally fits, kind of weird good.  If it weren't so far away and I weren't so involved with learning Yoga and all.  I think I might have upped camp and joined the Hunters Moon.   Like running away with the Gypsies, the wild people.  It was addictive and I really had a great night out.  SO exilerating to do something so radically outside of the ordinary.

C it turns out has a friend who is travelling the country investigating Folklore, which is how she had come across the Hunters Moon.  This Chap is wanting to set up a Museum of Folklore and is fascinating on the subject.

I love that I have a friend who loves to do adventurous things like that.   I feel so infused with life from that the whole thing.  And also some slightly weird sense that it was proper magic at work

You can see more of the Hunters Moon here and here

dreaming

of being and doing a workshop with Michele Cassou

"The creative painting work offers practical ways to dissolve creative
blocks and find inspiration so that, in a state of infinite possibility, art
becomes not a means to an end but a place we inhabit, a place to explore our
true selves and the mystery of our lives."
